Joseph F. McCarthy, Jr. of Tarrytown died suddenly on November 5, 2011 at the age of 50. Joe was born in N. Tarrytown on July 3, 1961. He was the son of Joseph F. and Mary Lobasso McCarthy. He was a 1979 graduate of Sleepy Hollow High School. He ran his own business, Handy Mac’s Home Improvements.
On May 2, 1987, he married Barbara Kirchoff in St. Teresa of Avila Church.
Joe was a loving and honorable man who gave quietly to his community, family and friends. He loved to fish and to walk in the great outdoors. He had a wicked sense of humor. Joe will be missed by all.
Joe was a life active member of Hope Hose of the Tarrytown Fire department. He served in many capacities over the years including Fire Chief from 2002 to 2005 He served on the Board of Wardens and was the Lay Chaplain of the fire department. He was a member of the Tarrytown Chiefs Association and a member of the Westchester County Parade Judges Assn. He was also a former member of Rescue Hose Company of the Sleepy Hollow Fire Department.
Joe was a parishioner of Transfiguration Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister and an Usher.
Joe is survived by a loving family including his wife Barbara, his mother Mary of Sleepy Hollow, his sisters Kathleen (John) Hardiman of Bethel, Ct. and Clarice (Blaine Taft) Pollack of Tarrytown. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and 2 great nieces. Also surviving are his mother-in-law Rosemary Kirchoff; sisters-in-law Eileen and Mary Kirchoff and brother-in-law William Kirchoff.
Visitation will be at Coffey Funeral Home on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9 PM. His Funeral Mass will be at Transfiguration Church on Thursday at 10:00
