UPDATE: Baby "Prince" Born in the Back of Police Car

Sleepy Hollow officers Wendy Yancey and Steven Dougherty delivered a 9 lb., 9 oz. healthy baby boy at 1:38 a.m. this morning.

Prince Luisi Mehki Lopez was born in the back of a police cruiser in front of his Sleepy Hollow home, and "I hope that's the only time he's in a police car," his mother Misty Mantey joked.

At approximately 1:30 a.m., the Sleepy Hollow Police Department received a call from Westchester County Control that a woman was having complications with a pregnancy. Upon their arrival at 100 College Avenue, officers Wendy Yancey and Steven Dougherty assessed that Mantey was in labor.

Assisted by several civilians, the officers walked her out of the building to meet an ambulance, but it was determined that the baby would need to be delivered right away. Mantey, the mother of three older children, was placed in the back of a police vehicle where the officers delivered a baby boy at 1:38 a.m. Mother and baby were then transported to Phelps Memorial Hospital by Sleepy Hollow Ambulance Corps volunteers where they are resting today.

Baby Prince, 9 lb. 9 oz and 20 inches long, experienced an easy, and fast, passage into the world. "He came speedy," Mantey said, adding that "he was 100% healthy, pink, crying and hungry."

"It was quite thrilling," Mantey said. "[The officers] were very professional; they did a fabulous job."

A neighbor who resides at 100 College Arms and wished to remain anonymous, observed the proceedings from a window and wanted to praise the officers. “Both officers did an excellent job… The female cop was awesome. Everyone did a great job… Great work,” she said. “It’s great comfort in knowing that we have great officers in this village.”

This is a touching story. For some reason, I felt like crying when I read it, but not out of sadness. Congratulations to the Mantey/Lopez family.
