Show These Southern Dogs Some Hospitality
Dozens of dogs made the trip from Arkansas to Elmsford; now they need new homes.
You usually can't talk to Marcy Rydd of Pets Alive Westchester, formerly the Elmsford Animal Shelter, without competing with the barking dogs...many, many dogs.
Dozens of them, 57 to be exact, were just transported in a giant truck full of pens to this local facility all the way from a failing rescue organization in Arkansas. The trip took 21 hours. Thirty-one more dogs will follow after they receive medical attention.
The owner of the center in Arkansas was dying of cancer and had more animals than she could care for. It's hard to unload that many dogs, but with a grant that paid for vetting and funding from the ASPCA for transport, Pets Alive was able to step in to house and help find these dogs homes up north.
Between their two facilities here and in Orange County, Pets Alive has thousands of square footage and the desire to get the dogs adopted quickly. "They are highly adoptable," said Rydd, describing all the dogs as young, healthy, spayed and neutered, "smaller than a Retriever but bigger than a Yorkie," and "so doggone cute."
"If we can step up and save an animal, if we can make a different, we're there," she said. The adoption process is "fun and easy" and Rydd encourages interested parties to do the application online below:

Our dogs in NY are being put to sleep within 24 hours. We all need to stop the killing in our own backyard. I hope Pets Alive in Elmsford also reaching in our own backyards. With this terrible economy animals are being dumped in New York. The South need to get upend speak up to help their own animals. Governor, Mayors, need to wake up and stop the Puppy Mills . They also need to have a law to spay and neuter have clinics to help their community of animals. It is great to help the animals from the South but the people in the South need to all ban together with some solutions. So we here can continue to help our own! In 2011 and they use the most inhumane treatments to animals gassing them and heart pick! The South seems backwards to me by using these cruel cruel acts!Perhaps more media action and some star power would help. vote in people who make a difference not just go with these inhumane treatments towards little puppy!!It is all sick.

Pets Alive saves dogs from our own "backyard" every single day and we very often pull from the CACC. Many NY KILL shelters though will not even ALLOW rescues to pull dogs from them. They prefer to kill them because they are too lazy to make an effort to save their lives. However, Pets Alive will NEVER EVER discriminate against animals that need help JUST because they are not local. That is not what we are about. We are about converting the nation to no kill. And any place that wants to save their animals can reach out to us and we will try to help them. By helping other organizations become no kill we create a domino effect for them to continue to save animals lives. That is why it is critical to not just save animals in our own backyard. We must help all rescues that want help because only by doing that will we secure a no kill nation!

@ Diana, I guess I'm not surprised that we'd be called backwards. But there are MANY shelters in the South that are saving animals every day. For those of us that love the "under dog" (pun intended), it is only natural to want to work with and help other shelters. These Arkansas dogs have been in very loving hands. The ranch owners have given their love and time 7 days a week to feed, water, give meds, clean, and work with these animals. We have placed many of our dogs in great homes. But now an illness has made it impossible to continue. We appreciate Pets Alive coming so far to give these dogs a chance at forever homes!
