Bronner Indictment Papers Show Man's Mindset

Papers add insight into Trent Bronner's motivation and actions prior to the March 20 fire.

The indictment papers filed yesterday against Sleepy Hollow Volunteer Fire Department member Trent Bronner paint a picture of a troubled young man who pre-meditated his actions.

The document (attached in this article) contains a summary of interviews conducted with Bronner about the fire at 13 and 19 Cedar Street that occurred on March 20, 2011.

The fire left 19 people homeless and both homes condemned.

In the summary of the interviews, Bronner changes and adapts his alibi a number of times before admitting that he set the fire at 13 Cedar Street, claiming it was his first arson.

Bronner allegedly said he started the fire because of personal problems with his girlfriend and problems he was having within the fire department. He noted he wanted time off from the department, be felt he request would be denied.

He also indicates that his target was well thought out. He stated he choose his 13 Cedar Street because of its proximity, less than a block, to Union Hose Engine Company on Cortlandt Street. Bronner was a member of Union Hose.

According to the indictment, Bronner stated that he entered the firehouse shortly after 4 a.m., took lighter fluid from the fire house and put it in two styrofoam cups. He then walked to the home on Cedar Street and ignited the fluid with matches before walking home. He would later respond to the fire scene with the rest of the Sleepy Hollow Fire Department.

The papers also indicated that Bronner at times became overwhelmed by his work in the department. It notes the 22-year-old had fainted at previous fire scenes, and was prone to panic attacks.

During another interview, Bronner allegedly stated that he set a fire on July 19, 2010 at 128 Cortlandt Street. The minor fire was put out before he responded to the scene with Union Hose Company.

Regarding that fire, Bronner stated he was out with friends drinking and had wanted to "just light it up."

He is a troubled young man, he needs some help. To put him in prison is not going to help him get through what he has done. I know this young man personally and he has a good heart. He was there for my mother when she was sick and always helped with her with the ambulance corp. I am not condoning what he did but to just put him in prison is not going to do anything for him.
He diserves to be helped and treated.
