Carriages, Horses and Hounds

A new art exhibit at Rockefeller State Park Preserve is sure to please equestrian enthusiasts.

Attention lovers of all things equestrian! Open now at the art gallery at the Rockefeller State Park Preserve is an outstanding exhibit titled "Carriages, Horses and Hounds."

The collection, curated by Audrey Leeds and Alix Schnee, contains vintage art from the private collections of David Rockefeller, Sem Groenewoud and Carol Lyden as well as works by contemporary artists Susan Dorazio and James Dyekman.

But the centerpiece of the exhibit is a Stanhope gig and a display of vintage tack and riding attire from the collection of David Rockefeller. The gig, a two-person affair, was manufactured in 1834 by J.M. Quinby & Company while the tack trunk (a contemporary construction) was hand crafted by Mr. Groenewoud's son Patrick.

"We are thrilled to have assembled this fine collection of horse-related art and artifacts both vintage and contemporary," said Preserve Manager Alix Schnee . "We are particularly grateful that the collectors of the privately owned items agreed to lend them to the exhibit. Mr. Rockefeller himself was especially pleased."

The exhibit runs until January 19.  Admission is free of charge parking fees apply on weekends during the late fall and winter.  The Preserve is open from sunrise to sunset.
