Cross-Country: Doyle Cruises To Eighth Place In Section 1 Championships

Since the opening practice of the 2011 season, Sleepy Hollow senior Katherine Doyle said the toughest part about being a senior is bidding adieu to a cross-country and track culture that's been akin to a surrogate family.

The elite lead runner of a functional cross-country unit the past four years, Doyle has left her stamp on the program. She attained a milestone earlier in the season when she captured her third straight JFK Invitational championship.

Then, in the Section 1 coaches invitational, Doyle turned in a commendable 5K race at 20 minutes, four seconds on the rugged, hill-dotted course at Bowdoin. Doyle added to her lasting legacy at Sleepy Hollow at the Section 1 championships , kicking out a 20:05 and fending off Nanuet's Megan Young to claim eighth place.

With her time and finish, the fluid Doyle has earned her third consecutive trip to the state championships.

Football: Sleepy falls to Nyack

Sleepy Hollow's redemption season, one which saw them right a sinking ship and emerge from cellar dweller to ticket seller, culminated with a 33-14 loss to Nyack at McCallum field. Nyack's Quincy Vassar spearheaded the defense with five sacks, making life difficult in the trenches.

Nyack was bolstered by a superb ground attack. The Indians' Paul Mitchell scampered for 136 yards on 10 touches.

Sleepy finishes the season at 5-4, vaulting back into the conversation. Nick Vallo went 16-for-34 for 208 yards, including a touchdown strike to Darien James.

James hauled in eight receptions for 130 yards. Steven Bencosme assured Sleepy Hollow that the program is headed in the right direction. Bencosme, among the state leaders in interceptions, picked off two passes to pace the Headless Horsemen.
