Faces and Places: J&G Deli and Catering

Faces and Places is our weekly column featuring the people of Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown.

From now through the 28th, the Hudson Valley celebrates Restaurant Week with discounts at select fine dining establishments.

We thought we'd head to the more casual and take-out oriented J&G Deli and Catering in Sleepy Hollow to ask where locals like to go for their sit-down meals. Some still prefer their rice and beans, pizzas and pub food to fancier fare.

What's your favorite restaurant in town?

Mike Tarchine, 24, of Beekman Avenue, Sleepy Hollow; carpet installer

  • "I like the pizza shop, Hollywood Pizza. All their food is good, pizza, zita. It was better under the old ownership, but it's still good."
Kevin Donovan, 42, of Continental Street, Sleepy Hollow; owner of Donovan Plumbing and Heating
  • "There's usually only two places I go to in town, Bridge View Tavern and J.P. Doyles. You've got the food and atmosphere, the nice view of the Hudson, at the Tavern, and the food is very good at Doyles.
Jay DiPalma, 71, of Gordon Avenue, Sleepy Hollow; retired from the food business
  • "Both of the new ones that opened up [Finalmente and the Bridge View] are doing a good job so far. I've been there a number of times. The prices are reasonable and the food is good. It's good change."
Cirilo Rodriguez, 47, of Cortlandt Street, Sleepy Hollow; general contractor
  • "Corona's [now known as Ambar]. I like everything they that they cook. Spanish food, rice, beans, meat."

J & G makes good Italian food! There's no mention of the Thai place, Que Chula Es, or Santorini. Those are good, too. Good luck to all the Beekman and Sleepy Hollow businesses.

There are so many restaurants, and so little time! I think the next place to hit up will be the Thai restaurant. I hear it's really good.

That place was packed today! Just needed the sun to come out and everything gets popping.

Yes it does Sean! It really gets hopping during mid-late Fall during the "Sleepy Hollow" season.

Add my props to the Tyrynda Thai restaurant too. Plus they are sooo nice. Support 'em!

Will try that Kristen, the next time I'm in town. Do any of have any other suggestions on Valley-Cortlandt Streets? I mainly only patronize "The Horseman". But am always up to giving other places in Sleepy Hollow a try.

That little section of Valley St. with the action has a good Mexican place and a Greek one (right across the street from each other, though I forget their names) I've been meaning to try. Also I love Andes Bakery (sign says Valley St. Bakery) for a snack. Little place, good coffee, pastries, and the like.
