Fleetwood Pizzeria Reopens Today in Sleepy Hollow

Two and one-half years after fire destroyed their popular pizza place, the Guzzo family returns to Beekman Avenue

At long last, Fleetwood Pizzeria will reopen today in Sleepy Hollow, nearly two-and-one-half years after closing on April, 23, 2008 because of extensive fire and water damage. The late afternoon fire that destroyed Restaurante Latino also severely damaged a hairdressing saloon a dentist officer and four apartments above. Judged beyond repair, all were leveled afterwards.

Fleetwood Pizzeria's location in the 47-year-old building at 70 Beekman Avenue, required extensive renovation.

Pasqualino "Pat" Guzzo and his wife Giuseppina, known as "Pina," opened the original Fleetwood Pizzeria at 70 Beekman Avenue in the early 1970s with a short menu -- regular pizza, Sicilian pizza, pizza rolls and calzone. The menu is much the same today.

In the 1970s, Pina Guzzo ran the pizza parlor during the daytime while Pat Guzzo worked full-time as a bricklayer. He managed the evening shift.

Three of the Guzzo's seven children, Patricia, Antonio and his older brother Angelo, will run the business with help from mom and dad (who is visiting in Italy and will miss the opening).

Fleetwood Pizzeria had a soft, unpublicized pre-opening on Monday, September 13 that became so crowded by passerby's and well wishers, Pina had to call in family members to help. The eatery was also a participant in the Sleepy Hollow Street Fair on September 12.

Pizza by the slice and pies with "The Works"

Pizza is served in two sizes at Fleetwood Pizzeria: a 16-inch pie at $12 and an 18-incher at $13; a Sicilian pie costs $14. A topping will add $1.50 to the cost of a half-pie and $2 to the price of a whole one. "The Works" five-topping specials cost $18.95 (small pie) or $20.95 (large pie). The toppings available are: sausage, peppers, pepperoni, meatball, onions, anchovies, bacon and mushroom.

Pizza slices cost $2.50 and $4 (if from the specialty pie of the day); a Sicilian slice is priced at $2.75. Add 75 cents for a pizza topping. Chicken and pepperoni rolls cost $3.25 each. The cost for calzone ranges from $4.95 to $5.75. Beverage choices are plentiful and include iced tea, fruit punch, soda and "Mango Madness."

Wedges were offered in the early days of Fleetwood Pizzeria and Antonio Guzzo said they will probably be added to the menu at a later date.

The Guzzo family opened its first pizza store in 1963 in Mt. Vernon, a year after arriving in America from Campania, Italy. They retained the name in relocating the business to Sleepy Hollow where the family resides today.

It was suspected that the 2008 fire was caused by faulty wiring in one of the apartments. Two hundred firefighters from 14 fire departments responded. No occupants were hurt. Two firemen were hospitalized, one for smoke inhalation and the other for chest pain, but both were released the next morning. The fire was first reported by a seventh-grader on his way home from Sleepy Hollow Middle School who called 911 from his cell phone. More than two dozen people, including eleven children, were left homeless.

Fleetwood Pizzeria is located at 70 Beekman Avenue, Sleepy Hollow, New York, 10591. It is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Phone: 914-631-3267
