Photos from Kykuit, which is now open for tours.

A true treasure of a historic landmark in Sleepy Hollow is Kykuit, the home and property created by John D. Rockefeller, Sr.

Work on the estate began in 1907 and landscaping of the grounds was initially given to the firm of Frederick Law Olmsted, who had designed Central Park. Rockefeller senior was unhappy with this work, however, and took over the design himself, transplanting whole mature trees, designing lookouts and the many scenic winding roads.

In 1906, the further design of Kykuit's grounds was completed by landscape architect William Welles Bosworth, who reworked the surrounding terraces and gardens with fountains, pavilions and classical sculpture looking out over the views of the Hudson River. His original gardens still exist, with plantings carefully replaced over time.

Subsequent Rockefellers continued to add to it's grandeur. Nelson Rockefeller's love of art led him to add numerous works by world famous sculptors to the vistas afforded by this beautiful setting.

Tours of the property are available from May through November. More information regarding tickets can be obtained by visiting the Historic Hudson website at: http://www.hudsonvalley.org/.
