Justin Wagner Visits Sleepy Hollow

If Justin Wagner, democratic challenger to republican Greg Ball’s District 40 Senatorial seat, had hopes that Sleepy Hollowites might come out for him on Saturday, he was wrong.

Wagner had set an informal meet and greet at Arthur Avenue Bread from 2 to 4 p.m. but by the time I got there (at 3:30 p.m.) his two campaign workers were packing up and the candidate himself was already gone.

David Brezler, the Latino Outreach Coordinator for Wagner, told me about a half-dozen folks showed up – several for the candidate and several for the bread.

He admitted the battle is uphill with District 40’s Republican leanings. Sleepy Hollow is decidedly not leaning that way, neither was the District 35 to which we used to belong.

On Saturday, once he left Arthur Avenue Bakery, Wagner walked up Wildey to make a few more local connections, but despite my efforts to find him I wasn’t able to connect with him myself. (He would have done well to move the whole thing closer to McDonald’s where the free coffee for National Coffee Day special had people coming in constant caffeine-stream). No matter that Wildey is Tarrytown, and not in the same district…

Though both candidates have well-covered the available sidewalk grass with campaign signage, they hadn’t made any stumping stops here in Sleepy Hollow yet – until Wagner’s visit Saturday. Ball has come to other Mt. Pleasant locales but, for the most part, these guys have stuck to their more northern territories. 

Joe Bachmeier, Media Spokesperson for Greg Ball’s campaign said, when asked if they had any plans to come through the village, “I will keep you up to date if we have any stops planned for Sleepy Hollow in the near future.”

And as far as the issue of redistricting that has some of us feeling disconnected from our district, Bachmeier offered this statement Ball made by January when the lines were finalized: 

“For me nothing will change. My focus before and after re-districting will continue to be on job creation, lowering taxes and working with Governor Cuomo to get New York State back on track,” Senator Ball said. “I am proud to have the opportunity to represent the seniors, veterans, small business owners, taxpayers and hardworking families in Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties. As a Senator I welcome the new and exciting opportunity to now fight and deliver for both New Castle and Mount Pleasant.”
