9:55 Here on Reynal Road in White Plains things are fine. Lots of wind and rain, but the roads in our immedaite neighborhood are fine and no major trees are down. Power is on. However, if you look in the back yard, the Mamaroneck River is just RAGING, bringing our runoff down to them through the way our storm drain system is designed. I saw on News 12 that Center Ave in Mamaroneck is flooded, but a homeowner says it's not as bad as the 2007 flood. He was carrying things out of his parent's house for them and he said that the basement is flooded, but to a lower water level than 2007. The water keeps coming after a storm ends, so I hope he keeps thinking of it as a handleable event that they have been through before.
We should always keep in mind that every time and upstream town adds a storm drain to dry off a lot for builders, it adds to the water problems downstream.

Storm was more hype than storm. Maybe our "government" wants to see how the population reacts to being restricted in travel - use the "crisis" to test out stuff, like Mayor Boomberg. We did get a lot of rain, but our "government" although on notice about inadequate storm drains and sewer capacity, DOES NOTHING.

I guess we now must serve official notice of inadequate stormdrains and sewers and flooding/drain back ups/conditions therefrom - pre condition to litigation. Wonder if we can use the Council TV and other written letters and comments as adequate and timely notice. Have to check the case law.

While flooding doesn't seem to be as bad as from the big ones in 2007, this is still a major event. Indian Village has water that's, maybe, only a foot shallower than four years ago. The businesses on Elm street got whacked - probably as bad as the 2007 flood. Not as many trees down, but the gov't announcements and precautions seem to have been totally appropriate. Better safe than sorry.

For people who want to get up and out, the Midway Shopping Center on Central Ave has many stores open. The ones I noticed were ShopRite, Sam's Camera Exchange, CVS and the Halloween outfit store. Driving home, I saw that Pizza and Brew and the new big diner are open. On Gedney Way in White plains, Sams is closed and so is Rooster's. The Gedney Deli is open. If you want to see dramatic flooding views, go to the Hartsdale Avenue bridge, over the Bronx River Parkway. The Parkway is just a wide river when you look upstream. From the Popham Rd bridge in Scarsdale, the , the parkway looks dry, but the river is just raging.

As of two hours ago, Mamaroneck Avenue was blocked off from the Metro-North overpass and beyond due to flooding, although I'm unsure how much further down the avenue. You would probably have to approach Mamaroneck Avenue from the other direction in order to access the Avalon.

Johan, I just went down there to check out the area for Emma. Coming from White Plains, I could only get to the Hess station. The police have Mamaroneck Ave blocked off there. I didn't ask about accessibility to the Avalon Apartments because I didn't see your note yet. I could see the water was going right up to 3 Jalapenos and the car wash. When I turned to leave, I could see that a little ways in the Nostrand floodline starts. It still looks pretty bad to me, but not as bad as '07.

The wind has been kicking up again, though. I think that a main danger, though is that the traffic lights aren't working, and it seems that it's a free-for-all at intersections. There are some dominant ones of our species who believe that when you come to an intersection with no working traffic lights, the one driving faster has the right of way. The submissive ones who are trying to avoid them might have to wait a bit. The problem will be when two dominant ones get there at the same time.

The flooding in the Howard Ave area didn't look as bad to me as it did in 2007. A big problem I saw, though was that a guy who lives 2 houses away from the church had his heating oil somehow disconnect and heating oil was spilled all over the place and now aside from the water issue, the neighbors now have the stench of heating oil permeating the air. I overheard a cop say that a danger was that with the wond kicking up, if a tree branch snapped and took down wires or just caused a spark itself it could be a really dangerous situation.

On the bend of Mamaroneck Ave, near Columbus Park many of the businesses had their sump pumps dumping out onto the sidewalk. On N Barry Ave, I saw sump pumps dumping away, too. # Jalapenos had their sump pump bailing out, too, but that's much better than 2007, when the water was over their tabletops inside.

I stopped in at Mamaroneck's Avalon, in case Johan is still curious. A lady who lives there said that although they have no power, people are living there. She said the toilets flush. She said the parking garage is dirty and some people are using it and some people are afraid that with another tide, the water will come back, so people are disagreeing as to whether to park in there or not. So Johan, if you're still reading this, I guess go back if you don't mind living with flashlights and candles. You can just walk to one of the great downtown restaurants that are open. Aside from the other ones I mentioned, Emilio's is open, too.

No, you miss the point: the storm was bad (I had a foot of water - drain and trap backup - the "good" stuff). Boomberg went out of his way to shut the city down - I'm 55 - NEVER saw that before. Interesting premise: use the storm and outages to see how people react to a complete shutdown - that and the internet kill switch sends one mind a-wandering. Gov't uses DARPA to analyze "tweets" and social waves to "predict" social unrest (google it). It deserves thought.

And I've seen worse hurricanes.

They shut things down because of the reaction when they did not prior to the snow storm last winter. So now as a result of all the criticism they got then, they overcompensate so now one can say that they did not prepare.

Con Ed is equally non committal as to when power will be restored to all customers. We'll keep you updated!

Wow! Thank you so much to the patch community for answering my questions! I went back to pick up some work clothes at around 5PM. The water was still flooding the garage and there was a Toyota Camry parked in the lot that was clearly destroyed. The seats were muddy. I have a picture on my blackberry and judging by the water line on the building it looks like the water got as high as 4 feet or so. I'm so glad I listened to the warnings.

Was able to grab work suit and rescue the top of my wedding cake that we are saving for our 1st anniversary from the freezer.

Going to spend another night in Port Chester at my sister in law's house. Power is on and it doesn't smell ike sewage. Windystill though. I thought this was supposed to be gone by now.

Larchmont, Turtle Park area: Lost power Sunday a.m., came back at 3:30, but then went out again at about 10 p.m. Go figure! Con Ed truck showed up about 15 minutes ago - let's hope they get it back up.

I was just at Burke Rehab in White Plains and a lady signing in said it took her two hours to get there from Chappaqua and it would usually take her a half hour. I asked her if trees had fallen across the highways and she said that the roads were all clear, but since the traffic lights weren't working, the cars stop at all intersections and there were big back-ups.

Is anyone else having problems with Verizon landline? Ours has been out since early Sunday, and the main repair number (800-837-4966) isn't working - just gives a steady beep.

Bonnie: try downloading SKYPE (takes only a few minutes) - works without a camera- it's internet phone with a microphone - great for free calling and picture to picture - talked to my daughter in Italy everyday - camera and all - was great and FREEEEEEE!!! if you got net, you got SKYPE. Microsoft does that as well - internet phone calls. Same as Vonage or Magic Jack - VoIP (voice over internet protocol). Verizon is only good when internet and cells go out. Also landlines need a warrant to tap.
