Moms Who Rock Around Our Towns: Dobbs Ferry's Brooke Nalle
Brooke Nalle is a pediatric sleep coach and the founder of Sleepy on Hudson
Each week, we're going to share with you a local mom who we think is awesome. We'll ask her some questions and hear about how she manages life with kids in our area. We hope you'll enjoy getting to know some of our neighbors.
Brooke Nalle is a pediatric sleep coach and founder of Sleepy on Hudson. lives in Dobbs Ferry with her husband, Graham and their children, Alistair (almost 8), Clara (5.5), and Loewy (2.5).
1. How do you balance being a mom and working?
Brooke, perhaps like many working parents, doesn't feel she does do the "balance thing" well, but on days when she does, she seeks out "the grey area and does work there - nap times, while the kids are on play dates or at activities, at night." She makes every effort to "be present when they are home from school," and for her, that includes "making dinner, helping with homework, referring disputes, cleaning up messes." She admits that she "plays a mean gave of tag and will bake cookies with her daughter anytime."
When her youngest daughter was born, she added some technology to her life to help manage her tasks. A rice cooker, slow cooker, a nespresso machine help get her through meals.
During the day, she finds "find pockets of time here and there" where she can make phone calls or send emails to clients. She can often be found in the Community Nursery School parking lot catching up on work. She also sends the kids to Around the World Children's Center a few hours after school on select days during the week so she can work and has found it to be a wonderful place.
Brooke adds that her husband, Graham, is really gracious about coming home from work and "taking over" so she can be involved with her clients. He also does some "full time parenting on weekends" if she is working.
2. We think your business is a great idea and would love to hear more it.
Brooke is a pediatric sleep coach, who "helps children of all ages and their families sleep a lot better."
To start, she sends clients a history form where they tell her "all about their little sleeper or in many cases their non-sleeper." She then follows-up with a home-visit and creates a plan that is "developmentally appropriate and attainable, and help them put that plan into place."
Because these issues are "very often in the heat of the moment," she makes herself available to her clients round-the-clock.
Brooke's track record is quite strong and she can usually get most "children sleeping through the night in less than two weeks without having to resort to cry it out methods."
She notes that "most families begin to notice serious positive changes after the first 3 days."
An important piece of her work is that she tries hard to "work in line with what a family values be it co-sleeping, attachment parenting, breast-feeding or not," and considers herself open to any situation, providing that it is "safe and developmentally appropriate."
3. When you find time for yourself, what do you enjoy doing locally?
Brooke can be found out on the town at various spots with friends, including The Cookery, Mima, Juniper and Harper's.
She also tries to enjoy some of the new exercise classes, including the 6:15 a.m. Warrior Rising class at Purple Crayon.
Brooke tries to get some work done at local spots like Antoinette's or the Station Cafe and for a treat, sometimes visits Cafe Latte for gelato, By The Way Bakery for their ginger cookies, or Riviera Bakhouse.
She can also be found local hot spots in Dobbs including Oasis Day Spa, "though not often enough," according to her, for a facial and at Industry finding great jeans.
4. What are some of your top things to do around Westchester with your family?
In the winter, Brooke takes the whole family to ice skate Rye Playland Ice Casino and to visit the Greenburgh Nature Center. When it snows, they enjoy sledding around "all of the little and big sledding hills that abound in these towns." You can also find this family at the library.
During the summer, they enjoy time at Ardsely Swim and Tennis, spending time on the Old Croton Aqueduct, and the picnic Wednesday nights at the Summer Concert Series at the Dobbs Ferry Waterfront. She also enjoys visiting the Hastings and Irvington Farmers markets.
Nalle describes her family as "4 season playground attendees and really love them all." They also live near the Jurhing estate in Dobbs and enjoy exploring the woods in the area.
5. What is your favorite thing about living in this area?
Brooke loves living near the Hudson River "that brings our towns together and is at the same time a reminder of the incredible city that is just a few miles to our south."
She appreciates that she "can keep a foot in both places through work and through friends." She also likes the great friends she and her family have made in the area and that they continue to meet interesting people."
Brooks says "I feel really good about raising my family and running my business here."
