Police Beat – Tarrytown: "Very Large" Coyote, Mysterious Gas Odor Pervades Village
A summary of incidents in Tarrytown from December 8, 2011 to December 15, 2011
The Tarrytown Police Department reported the following incidents:
Dec. 8
12:47 a.m. Police officer reported finding a vehicle at intersection of Wildey and Cortlandt streets with its trunk open and full of water. Trunk secured and incident noted for the record.
Dec. 9
8:40 a.m. Report of a female falling on ice at 832 S. Broadway. Woman, who struck her head, was transported to Phelps Memorial Hospital by Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
9:15 a.m. Caller reported a car left the scene of a motor vehicle accident on South Broadway. Driver of cab responded to headquarters after contact was made with his company. He reported that he had a fare in the car and was unable to stop at the time. Company stated that driver never said he was involved in an accident until after the police called. Driver issued a Uniform Traffic Ticket for leaving the scene of an accident. Driver stated he would personally make restitution for any damages.
9:59 a.m. Several calls were received reporting a strong odor of gas at several locations in the village. County Fire and Con Edison advised that Tennessee Gas was venting a gas line along the river. The Fire Department was dispatched and checked several areas throughout the village with negative results. The Warner Library and YMCA were advised by Con Edison to evacuate the buildings. Both the FD and Con Ed checked these locations and reported all clear.
3:03 p.m. A tenant of a River Plaza apartment came into headquarters reporting that she had received a letter from the IRS in reference to a 2010 tax return filed for social security. Complainant stated she is on disability and has not filed a tax return in several years. When she had contacted the IRS they advised her to file an identity theft report with the police.
Dec. 10
12:53 p.m. Complainant in headquarters reported that her GPS unit was stolen from her 2010 VW Jetta while parked overnight on North Washington Street. On this day after going to her vehicle, she discovered that someone had entered her vehicle and stolen the Garmin GPS valued at $250 from her windshield as well as Coach sunglasses ($70) from the glovebox. There was no sign of forced entry and she was not sure if she had locked her vehicle.
Dec. 11
1:15 p.m. Caller reported the window screen in the rear of her residence on Crest Drive had been tampered with. She stated that she noticed the screen in the spare bedroom on Saturday Dec. 10 had been tampered with and checked all of the windows and screens in the house to make sure they were locked. On this morning around 8:30, she checked the other window in the same spare bedroom and observed that the window screen there had been partially removed. An attempted burglary case was filed.
Dec. 12
12:22 p.m. Caller reported a very large coyote behind the firehouse on Route 119 that appeared to be moving very slowly. Officer assigned reported that coyote fled into the woods and did not appear to be sick.
3:17 p.m. Caller reported she believed her home on North Washington Street was broken into with numerous items stolen. Officers confirmed burglary occurred with entry made by forcing door open. Neighborhood canvass yielded negative results. Detective division processed scene and received list of stolen property.
3:22 p.m. Employee from Warner Library reported a person was stuck in the restroom. Tarrytown Fire Department removed door and party was removed from restroom.
Dec. 13
10 p.m. Caller reported that someone was expected to arrive at the Tarrytown Train Station from 125th Street at approximately 8 p.m. As of this time, person had not returned. Caller stated the missing person's vehicle was parked at the station and asked if police could check if it was still there. Officers reported observing the blue Volvo station wagon leaving the area; they stopped car at Main and White streets to check welfare of operator. They took driver into custody for DWI, impounding her car on scene by Stiloski Towing. She was transported to headquarters where she consented to a breath test. Test yielded a positive reading for alcohol (.08%) and defendant was booked for DWI and issued traffic tickets, returnable to village court on Dec. 21. Defendant was released to responsible person at 12:22 a.m.
Dec. 14
2:25 p.m. Caller reported a group of individuals were smoking marijuana on the front porch of the house adjacent to the YMCA parking lot on Windle Park, on the southeast corner of Windle and Main Street. Officers reported individuals gone on arrival.
5:16 p.m. 911 caller reported she was struck by a vehicle on Main Street. Woman was transported by TVAC to Phelps for an injury to her right foot. Vehicle involved, a 2011 Audi, was on scene and driver reported to headquarters to provide a written statement. Accident report filed.
