UPDATE: Kayaker Rescued Dog from Lake

Update, Monday: The man was in his kayak on frozen Tarrytown Upper Lake in an attempt to rescue his dog, report police this morning. 

Sunday's report that a man was trapped in his kayak on the frozen lake left many wondering why he would be there in the first place. Today, Tarrytown Police Lieutenant William Herguth clarified that the man was trying to rescue his pet. 

The man was walking his dog on the lake trail when the dog ran off and went out on the lake and fell through the ice, Herguth said. The man then reportedly went home and got his kayak and put that out to try to rescue his dog. He was able to get his dog into the kayak but was having trouble getting the boat back to shore. 

Tarrytown Fire Chief Eugene Gasparre said firefighters and police were able to throw the man a rope and pull him back to shore. There he was evaluated by the Tarrytown Volunteer Ambulance Corps and refused any further medical assistance.

He brought his dog to the Sleepy Hollow Animal Hospital for evalaution, police report.

Chief Gasparre worried about the duration of time it took for the man to call for help. "The fire department was dispatched around 2:49 p.m., and was returned to quarters by 3:17 p.m. The rescue was quick," Gaspare said. However, "how long was he out there before we were contacted? He had enough time  to get his own kyack, and try to attempt the dangerous rescue."

Some advice from Gasparre: "People should stay off the unsupervised lakes, and call for help immediately."

Tarrytown Police confirmed reports Sunday afternoon of a man in distress on Tarrytown’s Upper Lake, apparently trapped on the ice in a kayak.

Both Tarrytown Police and the Fire Department's marine rescue unit responded to the scene but police reported that the man was able to get himself out of trouble.

No other information was available at this time.
