Representatives Visit Sleepy Hollow for Census Push
Andrea Stewart-Cousins and representatives from Congresswoman Nita Lowey's office were in town to urge census participation.
Over the weekend, volunteers were out in Sleepy Hollow making a final push for participation in the census.
This time they weren't alone. Joining the groups of high schoolers were State Senator Andrea Stewart-Cousins and representatives from Congresswoman Nita Lowey's office.
"It's pretty important that all the political people are coming down and participating," said census volunteer, and high school senior, Matthew Lighty. "It makes the gravity of it all seem more important, and it's good for the community to see them out participating."
Currently, downtown Sleepy Hollow is 52 percent counted, and downtown Tarrytown is 59 percent counted. Surrounding areas have participation rates between 67-71 percent. Census workers will begin the task of going door-to-door to obtain census information from households that haven't completed their forms starting next week.
This weekend's push involved three stations that were set up at Beekman Ave., Barnhart Park and across from McDonalds on Wildey St. Volunteers handed out flyers and census memorabilia along side the representatives and Sleepy Hollow Mayor Ken Wray and Village Administrator Anthony Giaccio.
Some of the young volunteer workers, who have admitted to feeling a bit strained going door-to-door, admired the fact that elected officials were dedicating their time and validating their efforts.
"You know, I'm really impressed," Stalyn Deleon said. "I didn't think they would ever do that."
Volunteers admit that the their work is far from over, and they will continue to be a presence on the streets until the end of the month.
Census workers will be at Tarrytown's Third Friday this week, at Earth Day celebrations this Saturday in Sleepy Hollow, and on the streets again this Sunday. If you have not received a form, they can provide you with one and can advise you on how to fill it out.
You can also get help, or pick up forms, at the Warner Library this week between 5-8 p.m. on Monday and Thursday; and from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
