Rockefeller Park Conditions Near Perfect for Winter Recreation

Miles of trails, open free to the public, are now covered with packed powder snow, perfect for cross country skiing or walking this week.

Two days after the second major snow storm of the season, winter recreation conditions are perfect at the Rockefeller State Park in Sleepy Hollow on Route 117.

Thursday afternoon offered sun and a light breeze to cross country skiers , hikers and dog-walkers.

The Callender family of Hastings, all on cross country skis, said they'd been enjoying the park for more years than they could remember.

Michael Stafford of Ossining walking his Akita, Kodiak, said that the park was in perfect condition and that wildlife was still as active as ever.

"This place is great!" he said. "I saw a family of coyotes at that ridge [Overlook Trail] last week,"

Even equestrians found the trails in good condition for riding.

Access and parking in the main lot on Route 117 are free midweek in the winter and $6 on the weekends.  Further information can be found at http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/59/details.aspx.The park is open from sunrise to sunset.

There are no rentals or concessions, so visitors must bring their own equipment and trail snacks.   Sledding is prohibited, but available at the adjacent Rockwood Hall.
