Sleepy Hollow 10K Run Sets a High Bar

More runners than anticipated came out for the first annual 10K run through Sleepy Hollow.

If you saw a masked murderer running through your neighborhood on Saturday morning, your eyes weren't playing tricks on you.

The inaugural Sleepy Hollow 10k Run kicked off Saturday, attracting hundreds of runners, many of whom ran in their Halloween costumes along village streets.

"This is awesome," said Sleepy Hollow resident and Rivertown Runners founder Kristen Idalski. "It was a fantastic day, with perfect running weather."

The turnout was a surprise for Idalski, who had underestimated the interest in the event.

"Originally our target was, fingers crossed, 200," Idalski said. "Realistically we were expecting 150, but we hit over 250, which is phenomenal."

The 10k course circled through the inner village before tackling some of the hills in the Manors of Sleepy Hollow. The event attracted runners from across the region, but many weren't ready for Sleepy's versatile terrain.

"I thought it was a pretty difficult run, mostly because of the hills," said Lauren Spirelli, of Manhattan. "I am training for a half marathon, so I guess this is good training. Plus, it was nice scenery and the people were friendly."

Despite the challenge, even local runners were excited to participate in an event set in their own backyard.

"I was really nervous coming in, but I thought they did an excellent job putting it together," said Jordan Becker of Tarrytown. "I heard about this going around, and I like to run. So, they had a race in town and the only thing I could do is come out and support it."

You can find full results from the run in the attached .pdf file. The top three for both the male and female runners were:

Female – Time

Rabekah Madebach – 44:40

Kristen Curren – 44:58

Sharon Callahan – 45:18

Male – Time

Nick Roosen – 32:35

Michael Anderson – 36:48

Louis Adamson – 37:35

Sleepy Hollow Village Administrator Anthony Giaccio said the event was a success from the village's viewpoint, because it brought new people into town and raised awareness of the village's offerings.

"It's a big undertaking for us," Giaccio said,"But to have 250 people standing on Beekman and getting familiar with us is a good thing."

Rivertown Runners and the Village of Sleepy Hollow are planning for a larger half marathon in the spring. The success of the 10k on Saturday almost assures the event will occur.

"We have a good base now, and we're going to have to start gearing up for it," Idalski said.

It was a great event. Lots of participants, and everyone seemed to have a lot of fun. I hope to be able to do it myself next year.
