The Maryland man was crushed between his trailer and the bridge's side barrier.

Update: A 53-year-old man, Michael L. Haring of Cambridge, Maryland, was killed today at approximately 1 p.m. after exiting his vehicle on the Tappan Zee Bridge superstructure.

He left his car after experiencing trouble with his trailer, which was hitched behind his car, authorities said.

"The trailer likely fell off the hitch," said Sargent Kevin Flynn with the Tarrytown State Police Department.

Two south-bound lanes of the Tappan Zee Bridge have been closed as emergency crews respond to a serious accident on the New York State Thruway.

The multiple-car accident occurred at about 12:45 p.m. on the bridge's superstructure with reports of at least one motorist bleeding at the scene.

Emergency crews from Rockland and Sleepy Hollow responded to the bridge to assist.

Unconfirmed reports indicate a motorist may have been hit by a passing car as they got out of their vehicle in the immediate aftermath of the accident. Another report indicated that the motorist may have been trapped by the vehicle and was in need of the extraction.

State Troopers based in the Tarrytown Barracks could not comment on the accident or confirm reports because an investigation is still pending.
