The Great Easter/Passover/Egg Round-Up

A listing of this weekend's holiday festivities in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.

After checking in with the temple, churches, and recreation departments of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, here's our quick round-up of this weekend's holiday festivities for both Passover and Easter.

Passover

We're well into the seven (or eight, depending on your practice) tradition-steeped days of Passover, starting with the Seder feast on the first night (or two, again depending). Passover concludes with various service and dinner options at Temple Beth Abraham, which houses two separate temples for Conservative and Reform traditions.

Family Shabbat Dinner on Friday, April 2at 6 p.m. is followed by the family Shabbat service at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 3 at 9 a.m. is a Conservative service, with the Conservative Passover service on Tues, April 6 at 9 a.m. Sunday, April 4 marks the Reform Passover service at 7:30 p.m.

Easter

Whether you think of Easter as a chance to find and eat eggs, a time to put on a fancy hat and belt out a He-hath-risen hymn, or both, here are some of your local options for the festive holiday (and what promises to be a perfect spring weekend):

For the Early Birds…

You have two crack-of-dawn Sunday service options, both of which reward early birds with worms, i.e. breakfast.

The Reformed Church of the Tarrytowns holds a 7 a.m. service at their original church up the road. Parishioners meet on the burial grounds of the Old Dutch Church and progress from solemnity into a joyous service inside. Service is followed by a continental breakfast back at the main "Clock" church at 42 N. Broadway.

The Union Church of Pocantico Hills sets the alarm clock even earlier with a 6:30 a.m. sunrise service in the meadow behind the church, also followed by a continental breakfast.

For the egg hunters:

Tarrytown's egg hunt happened last weekend, but there are still a few chances for the wee ones to gather their colored treasures. The Village of Sleepy Hollow holds a hunt on Saturday, April 3 at 11 a.m. in Douglas Park.

The Reformed Church of the Tarrytowns adds an egg hunt to their rich Easter line-up with a Sunday School hunt at 9:30 a.m., followed by service at 10:30  featuring hand bells, a brass quartet and organ accompaniment.

For hungry later sleepers:

If you miss out on the early-riser breakfasts listed above, there are two Sunday potluck brunch options at Christ Episcopal Church: following both the 10 a.m. service and the 12:30 p.m. Spanish-language service. On Good Friday, a huge cross covered in chicken wire is erected in front of the church. As parishioners arrive on Sunday morning, they contribute flowers to the display. By the end of the afternoon, the cross, says parish administrator Grae Mathe, is "covered in flowers. It's quite lovely."

While the Salvation Army doesn't plan anything special for Easter, they follow their Sunday noon service with their usual philanthropy, cooking and serving up a 2 p.m. fellowship meal, open to anyone in the community.

Happy holidays!
