On Christmas Eve, Friday, Dec. 24, virtually all local restaurants will be open and most will offer their regular menus. But hours of operation for the kitchen (see below) may differ from normal practice as some restaurants plan to close earlier than usual. Holiday specialities abound with the emphasis on catch of the sea.

Eating seafood on Christmas Eve is a long standing Roman Catholic tradition. At one time, it was custom to celebrate Christmas Eve with seven or more fishes for dinner (known as the "Feast of the Seven Fishes"). Although cooking and plating a large number of different fishes isn't practical for most restaurants today, offering a greater variety of seafood dishes on Christmas Eve is a practice that prevails.
