YAI Hosts Blood Drive to Help Alleviate Regional Shortage

Those with Type O (RH negative) blood can donate to anyone and are especially needed.

YAI/National Institute for People with Disabilities in Tarrytown will host a blood drive with the American Red Cross, Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sept. 23.

"This is our second blood drive with them," said Bonnie Dougan, YAI's program supervisor. "At last year's drive, 41 people registered, and we got 29 pints."

A more recent blood drive on March 18 with Phelps Memorial Hospital Center yielded 16 pints of whole blood.

"Each pint can help three people," Dougan said. Donors must be 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and have general good health; a photo ID is usually required. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days while platelets can be donated every three days or up to 24 times per year.

Red Cross staff will check each person's eligibility and donation information.

"YAI will provide free snacks, refreshments and a place to rest and relax for each person who donates," Dougan said. To register, call 914 631-2400, ext. 300.
