YMCA, Rotary and Community Make a Great Day

Smashing success was the verdict on Saturday's annual event in Patriot's Park, which also raised a ton of money for our community.

The ducks, the great food, the live music, those wonderful inflatables... Each year in Patriot's Park the YMCA Healthy Kids Day/Rotary Duck Derby just seems to get better and better. And the perfect weather always helps.

Patch had a table where myself (your editor), and Gina, my regional ad rep, had the kids (and a few adults!) making green handprints on their canvas Patch totes. Thanks to all who came by and said hello and humored me as I painted their hands. Gina and I had a great time, but then I had to pack up and let my kids get in those bouncy castles already!

YMCA's Barbara Turk figured over 1,200 people the popular event. She wrote:

This year was our most successful ever, with a net revenue of $9,000 for our annual Strong Kids Campaign, which provides scholarships and financial aid to the underserved in our community.

And Turk had these businesses and organizations to thank: "Y Event Sponsor Stop and Shop thrilled children and adults both with their prize wheel, offering Stop and Shop gift cards, grocery bags, cold cups, and more. Y Ride Sponsors included Citibank, EF Schools, Hudson Health Plan, and Wells Fargo Bank."

Rotarian JoAnne Murray (one of those human-sized ducks) reports on the race side of the day:

It was a huge success! Total rubber ducks raced 1,803.  We will net aproximately $15,000 which will go back to the community in the form of grants and scholarships.

The winner of each heat received lunch for two at the Sheraton restaurant.

They were:

  • Heat #1 Stan Biloon
  • Heat #2 Susie Ellis
  • Heat #3 RSHM Life Center
  • Heat #4 Ava & Stella Anderson
  • Heat #5 Sarah Chalfy

The Grand Prize Winner, Sarah Chalfy, won $1,500. Which couldn't be better timing for her. Chalfy was in Tarrytown to sign a lease on an apartment and now has the deposit for the apartment!

2nd Prize Winner: RSHM won an overnight at the DoubleTree with a gift certificate for dinner at Red Hat

3rd Prize Winner: Stan Biloon won a $300 gift certificate to Baby Chic Boutique.

"We owe thanks to so many that helped make this a success," Murray writes. "The Tarrytown Hope Hose and Conquerer Fire Depts, The Rec Dept, DPW, The Girl Scouts, Interact Students, and all the Rotarians that volunteered their time. The collaboration with the YMCA Healthy Kids is such a bonus for the Rotary Rubber Duck Derby. It’s a great collaboration of two great organizations."
