Your All-Access Pass to Tarrytown Music Hall – February
This month features a Q&A with singer-guitarist Michael Glabicki of Rusted Root.
February is here and that means love is in the air with Valentine's Day. It’s also winter break and the month to celebrate President’s Day and Black History Month.
In honor of all these holidays, the Tarrytown Music Hall has an exciting lineup of shows.
Our featured artist of the month is singer-guitarist Michael Glabicki of the Pittsburgh-based band, Rusted Root. They’re a young, hip, worldly roots rock band that integrate the Grateful Dead’s jam-heavy rock with percussion influences based on African, Middle East and Latin American music. They’re ready to rock the Music Hall and put you in the mood for love.
PATCH: Rusted Root is a new and fresh young band. How old are the members and how did you come up with the name and how did the band get its start?
Michael Glabicki: We’re all young at heart. We all met in Pittsburgh. It was a combination of auditioning people but also everyone knowing someone. As far as the name is concerned, we just sat in a circle and put words together—it had no meaning at the time.
P: The band will be performing at Tarrytown Music Hall on February 11. Have you played there before or is this your debut?
MG: We played the region a million times but I don’t think Tarrytown. I could be mistaken—it’s all a blur to me now.
P: Your latest album is called ‘Stereo Rodeo.’ Your music is a combination of roots rock and worldly music. Who are the band’s biggest influences and how long did it take to record?
MG: It took from start to finish about a year to make. I would say there are too many influences to count—but on this album there was a noticeable infusion of Neil Young.
P: You played last year at the Pleasantville Music Festival and other festivals plus you toured with a list of notable musicians like Jimmy Page/Robert Plant and also toured last year and are embarking on a tour this month. Besides touring, are there any plans for recording a new album?
MG: We just started work on our new record.
P: What do you feel are some of the pros and cons of being in a band?
MG: There are a lot of good ideas that I wouldn’t think of—but sometimes it takes an hour to decide where to eat.
P: What do you enjoy most about touring and recording?
MG: Self-expression.
P: Do you prefer larger or smaller venues?
MG: Smaller the better for me— I like to hear peoples hearts beating.
P: Rusted Root has received a wide following with fans. How has the response been with the albums and tours?
MG: Stereo Rodeo has been received great. It’s awesome to see everyone sing along with the new songs.
P: Are there any upcoming projects that you’re working on?
MG: A new solo record along with the Rusted Root record.
P: What has been your most memorable moment on tour and off?
MG: Probably touring with Robert Plant and Jimmy Page.
P: What’s next for Rusted Root?
MG: Keep breathing and playing music.
