Your Ticket to the Tarrytown Music Hall - September

A monthly round-up of the latest news and coming acts at the Music Hall, including the starred "Best Bet" you can't miss.

To all those ladies waiting at intermission for the few old Music Hall restroom stalls, Executive Director Björn Olsson wants to say, "we know. "

In fact, he's been known to do just that on a busy night, walking up to the line outside the restroom to share his sympathy. "For patrons, the new restrooms will make a huge difference. They've been putting up with under-dimensioned bathrooms for many years. "

Just planning the restroom renovations has been a major undertaking that, says Olsson, "we're still kind of grinding away at." Securing enough additional funding for the half-million dollar project has been a long haul in itself. So far, the coffers include $150,000 from Save America's Treasures and $100,000 from New York State Dormitory Authority. Olsson also anticipates a Community Development Block Grant of $50,000 to go toward the handicapped accessible restroom.

Another behind-the-scenes but equally essential renovation on Olsson's immediate wish list is the back wall of the theater, which needs water-proofing, temperature-proofing and other updates. "It's something patrons never see but it's the envelope of the theater. It's in pretty bad shape and it's very important."

It can't hurt revenue to have a few big-name acts taking the stage soon. September's new addition is Taylor Hicks, with Aimee Mann on the horizon in November. Here's more on Taylor and the other upcoming acts of the month (including a bodybuilding competition) below.

SEPTEMBER

9/11: Led Zeppelin Experience

It's become an annual fall tradition at the Hall: the Hammer of the Gods recreating the look, light show, and huge sound of such hits as "Dazed & Confused" and "Stairway to Heaven."

*9/16: Taylor Hicks

He doesn't look the part of your average American Idol winner with his salt and pepper hair, and he doesn't sound it either with his unique blend of country, R&B, jazz and rock'n'roll. Since garnering an unbelievable 63 million votes back in 2006, Taylor Hicks has remained the humble Alabama boy who doesn't forget this roots, when he was playing, not so long ago, to empty roadhouses.

Of these hard beginnings, he once said, "Not being taken seriously can be a good thing. It stokes the fires." Now, that he has "fame" under his belt, it seems the next thing to stoke his fires is battling the stereotype of just being another one of those ballad-belting reality TV stars.

In his memoir, he explored the "two-sided gig known as American celebrity." After many years of big arena shows around the world, his first independent album under his own record company came out in 2009. Now he'll spend the fall playing intimate venues like ours. And on a recent live chat through his website, he also admitted he's "looking forward to having some time off, for sure." Good luck with that, Taylor.

"Obviously he got famous through American Idol which I think in a way is holding him back when he's really very talented," says Olsson. "So it'll be interesting to see what people think of him."

9/24: Petula Clark

Relive the British Invasion of the '60s! England's most successful female recording artist comes back to our soil to play classics including her Grammy-winning "Downtown."

9/25: 2010 Doc Brown East Coast Natural Bodybuilding, Figure & Bikini Championships

Beefcake galore in this men's and women's buff-body day-long competition.

Taylor Hicks travels with an incredible 7 piece band! He is an incredibly talented singer/songwriter and musician as well as a gifted stage performer! His music runs the gammit from blues to soul to acoustic to funk to disco to pop! Everyone comes away smiling after seeing one of his shows! I would highly recommend this show to anyone who enjoys live kick-ass music!

I want to thank you so much for the nice words about Taylor Hicks. He is a Big Name. He was the draw for Grease on Broadway. And also, on the road tour. I saw Grease. People lined up by the hundreds to buy his cd. I know I waited in link a long time.
In addition, I saw Taylor on his 2007 Arena tour. Sold out crowds. I was at one of those too.
And Epcot last year, he brought in more people than any of the other singers or bands. He was number 1 there. That is why Epcot raised the price of the rooms this year for the time he is there. He is Fantastic. Been all over the tv. Just did a special for the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Did an ad for the Alabama Gulf Coast. The man never stops.
