Irvington Historical Society hosts groundbreaking exhibit:  “Once Upon a Time: The Stories of the Brothers Grimm and Washington Irving”.  The McVickar House, located at 131 Main Street in Irvington, is transformed into an enchanted forest with re-creations of classic fairy tales from “Little Red Riding Hood” to “Rip Van Winkle” as guests explore the writers’ lives and works.  The exhibit is the result of years of extensive research by Dr. Erik Weiselberg, Irvington resident and scholar of both European and U.S. History, and it reveals for the first time how the Grimms and Irving were transatlantic kindred spirits, even if they never met.  The exhibit chronicles major influences on their parallel lives and how those events shaped their stories and tales.  Visitors of all ages will enjoy traveling through time, exploring the writers’ childhoods and native lands, learning about the source material for their famous tales, experiencing the stories firsthand in the Enchanted Forest, examining their political action, seeing how their stories have been adapted at the movie theater, and much more.

SPECIAL LECTURE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2011 3:00–4:00 AT ST. BARNABAS CHURCH, 15 NORTH BROADWAY, IRVINGTON, NY, WITH GUIDED TOUR OF EXHIBIT FOLLOWED BY WINE AND CHEESE RECEPTION

Dr. Erik Weiselberg, Irvington resident and scholar of both European and U.S. History, will discuss the exhibit and share numerous visuals at St. Barnabas Church, 15 North Broadway, Irvington, NY, followed by guided tour of the exhibit at McVickar House and wine and cheese reception.  Free admission.
