A Cautionary Article From 100 Years Ago This Week, Stay Off The Ice

ALFRED ANDERSON DROWNED.
While Skating on River with Two Companions Breaks Through Ice.
One boy was drowned and two narrowly escaped drowning in the Hudson River just off the Tarrytown Yacht Club house on Friday afternoon last. The cries of the boys brought Edward Ackerly and several others who were nearby to their assistance. By throwing out a rope, two of the boys -- John Mallick and his step-brother, Joseph Sokol, both of North Tarrytown -- were rescued. The other boy, Alfred Anderson, twelve years old, who had on skates, sank for the last time before the rescuers could get the rope to him.
With the use of long poles with hooks upon them, the rescuing party managed, after fifteen minute's work, to bring him to the surface. In the interim Dr. Charles W. Fairchild had been summoned and when the boy was brought to the Tappan Zee Garage, the doctor ordered the usual methods for drowning persons. The pulmotor was rushed down from the hospital and this was put in use, but in vain. The father of the boy, although grief stricken, assisted in an attempt to resuscitate the boy.
The young lad lived on lower Main street and was the only child of Mr. and Mrs. Anderson. The funeral services were held from his homeon Monday afternoon, Rev. John Knox Allen officiating, and burial was in Sleepy Hollow Cemetery.
