CELF’S Summer Institute Educates Teachers about Sustainability

Deadlines approaching for 3-day Program in July

Scholarships and discounts available

The headlines are gloomy – budget cuts, teacher training cuts and growing class sizes are just some of the challenges facing New York school districts. Teacher training focused on active, inquiry-based learning and improving vital critical-thinking skills for all learners is not only an investment in the future, it is fiscally responsible – now more than ever.

In recognizing school budget crises and pervasive need for educational reform, The Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation (CELF) has devoted itself to raising funds to support professional development for teachers throughout Westchester County and New York City. Thanks to full and partial scholarships, grants and group-discounts, more K-12 teachers will be able participate in Education for Sustainability (EfS) training at the CELF Summer Institute this July. In-service and graduate school credits are available to eligible participants.  Institute program supporters include the Heinemann Foundation, Con Edison, and Whole Foods Market.

CELF courses enable teachers to employ the most engaging, effective teaching methods in spite of shrinking school budgets and burgeoning class sizes. Summer Institute participants focus on integrating real world content and key EfS principles into their existing standards-based curriculum. By using a “systems-thinking” approach to problem solving, teachers trained at the Institute will provide students the learning tools and skills to prepare them for the complex environmental, social and economic changes both in their classroom and in the global community.

The 3-day Summer Institute is offered in collaboration with Manhattanville College. Two workshops will be offered from July 25-27 in historic Reid Castle, on the college’s beautiful Purchase (NY) campus:

K-5 Teachers - “Connecting Children with Nature and Community”

Middle and High School Teachers - “Education for Sustainability”

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
