Empty Bowls Fundraiser

On Saturday, October 29th @ 5pm, Temple Beth Abraham, www.tba-ny.org, will be hosting an Empty Bowls fundraiser at, 25 Leroy Avenue, Tarrytown, NY.   All proceeds will go to the Community Food Pantry at Christ Episcopal Church, Elizabeth and John Streets, Tarrytown, which serves Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow.

Ruth Messinger, President of American Jewish World Service (AJWS) and former Manhattan Borough President, will be speaking about “Bringing Food Justice to Your Thanksgiving Table.”  AJWS is an organization that works to alleviate poverty, hunger and disease in the developing world.

“What is Empty Bowls?  Since its small beginnings in 1990, Empty Bowls has become an international grassroots project to raise funds for local food shelves.  Bowls are donated by artisans, made by congregants, students.  Every guest chooses a bowl and is served a simple meal of delicious soup and bread.  Everyone keeps their bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in their own community and throughout the world.”   www.emptybowls.net

The cost will be $20/adults and $10 for children under 10.

All proceeds go to the Community Pantry of Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. Please RSVP to tikkunolam@tba-ny.org or 631-1770 by October 24

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
