The Purple Crayon Presents: Open Canvas

Open Canvas is a community program of The Purple Crayon that seeks to provide creative support and inspiration for emerging and established artists, including monthly discussion groups, workshops and professional development classes.

Please join Open Canvas's fall session beginning Thursday, October 4th from 10:00 - 11:00 am at The Purple Crayon in Hastings.

Monthly sessions will include group coaching activities, structured feedback on work and networking opportunities. Sessions will be co-facilitated by artist and educator, Jill Liflander and writer and coach, Naomi Vladeck. 

Additional programming may include:

  • Tax and Accounting Issues for Artists
  • Script Your Story: Making a Case for Your Work
  • Expanding Your Creativity
  • Making the Most of your Marketing Resources
  • Critical Legal Topics for Artists and Performers
  • Cultivating your Visual Artistry from Home

Participation in Open Canvas's fall session is $85 for the first four sessions (or $25 for individual monthly meetings) and includes special discounts on additional Open Canvas programs, and an invitation to join our Facebook community of artists sharing resources and inspiration. We encourage registration in advance.

 Monthly sessions will take place at 10 am on:

  • Thursday, October 4th
  • Thursday, November 8th
  • Thursday, December 6th
  • Thursday, January 3rd

The Purple Crayon is a non-profit dedicated to fostering creativity and productivity, career and life satisfaction, and personal and social responsibility.

Naomi Vladeck received a MA from Gallatin/ NYU Tisch School of the Arts. As Director of Development and Planning at Dance Theater Workshop, Naomi nurtured the work of many artists and administrators as they strived to articulate their visions.  She is a lifelong student of creative writing, is trained as a Life Coach by the Coaches Training Institute (CTI).

Jill Liflander received her undergraduate degree in Cultural Anthropology and has a Masters in Education. She created 'Jilly Puppets,' a one woman puppet troupe that incorporates choreography, poems and music with an educational message. She has studied painting, creative writing, and dance, is currently a member of the Evolve Adult Ensemble, and is also a character dancer with the Bossy Frog Band, an award-winning children's musical group.

When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
