Tonight: Public Forum on Current Tappan Zee Bridge Proposal

The League of Women Voters of Westchester (LWVW) is holding a public forum tonight, Thursday, May 10th entitled "The Current Tappan Zee Bridge Proposal." Panelists will include a representative of the New York State Thruway Authority, the Regional Plan Association, Tri-State Transportation Campaign, and The Build the Bridge Now Organization.

The meeting will take place at the on West Main Street, beginning at 6:00 p.m. We expect the panelists to speak for a total of about one hour and then the LWVW will make a statement outlining its position. After this we will take a few statements from the floor from individuals whose organizations are directly involved with the Tappan Zee Bridge and any changes to it. Finally, we will take questions (and comments) from the floor. We expect the meeting to end by 8:00 p.m.

To reach the Senior Citizen Center, go west on Main Street in Tarrytown over the bridge at the railroad. Turn left. Signs will be posted. We look forward to a lively meeting.

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
