Mustangs Play Well in May

Mustangs Survive Tough Stretch

For the past two seasons the strongest AYSO under age 10 girls soccer teams in the Greater Westchester County Area 3-T have been Pleasantville and Mt Pleasant. The Tarrytown Mustangs can be added to this elite list after surviving both teams in back to back games. On May 4th the Mustangs defeated Pleasantville 2-0 at Farrows field earning a split for the season. Mt Pleasant had also split with Pleasantville and had tied Tarrytown in the fall 0-0. Tarrytown found themselves on the road again, this time at Bradhurst field in Mt Pleasant on May 11th. Both teams entered Saturday’s match hoping to take the clear lead for 2012-2013 season. The game started under threat of rain when the Mustangs had some good early fortune. Sam Nutig scored with a corner kick that deflected off a Wildcat player. This was the first time the Mustangs had ever scored against Mt Pleasant. The game was played with intensity and physicality from start to finish. Mt Pleasant had speed and skill and kept the Tarrytown defense stretched wide and long. The Mustangs still entered half time with the lead and Julia Costa continued her streak of not allowing a goal in the Spring. In the second half the Mustang defense broke down allowing two goals against neophyte keeper Samantha Nutig. Defender Maddy Navin then took matters into her own hands and willed a goal to tie the game in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs were short players because of the Mother’s day weekend and many girls were playing more minutes than they were accustomed to. Samantha Livingston was a force on the right sideline from her position at wing and took a solid shot on goal. Talia Fante battled larger defenders from her left wing position and consistently maintained possession and advanced the ball. Maya Weitzen controlled the center offense position and nearly earned a game winning assist on a perfect cross in the fourth quarter. Annie Dineen was tasked with defending the left side and thwarted many Mt Pleasant attacks. Julia Costa was not only perfect at keeper, but also took several shots from her midfield position. Finally Sadie Swenson played offense and defense and nearly scored from her defensive position. At the end of the game Julia Costa was driving for the win when she was tripped by Mt Pleasant. Julia took the ensuing indirect kick which was unsuccessful as time expired and the game ended in a 2-2 tie. These teams and Pleasantville will likely next meet at the Wiz of Oss tournament on June 16th. The Mustangs next play the North Salem Tigers at Washington Irving field on May 18th. Their last match with the Tigers was won by Tarrytown 1-0. The Mustangs now have 11 wins, 1 loss, and 3 ties for the 2012-2013 season

 Mustangs Sweep North Salem

After playing the two toughest teams in the league back to back on the road, the Tarrytown AYSO girls under age 10-travel soccer team returned home to Washington Irving field and defeated the North Salem Tigers 2-0 on Saturday May 18th. The Tarrytown Mustangs also defeated the Tigers in the fall 1-0. Sophie Sylves-Berry scored the first goal of the game from close range off an assist from Catherine Grimes. The second score was from long range when Samantha Livingston passed back 20 yards to Samantha Nutig for a left footed power shot that whizzed by the North Salem keeper. The Mustangs had many shots on goal generated by offensive players Emma Clarke, Maya Weitzen, Annie Dineen, Julia Costa, and Sadie Swenson. Sadie, Annie, and Julia played defense as well. Defensive captain Maddy Navin led a stingy unit that only allowed three shots on goal all game, while earning their eleventh shut out of the year. Starting goalie Julia Costa continued her spring streak of not allowing a goal, while Maya Weitzen and Sophie Sylves-Berry filled in for Julia in the second half with equal results. The Mustangs now have 12 wins, 1 loss, and 3 ties for the 2012-2013 season. They next play at Ardsley on June 1st.
