Breast and Ovarian Cancer Walk Oct. 7

More than 9,000 participants turned out for this event last year.

Momentum is mounting for Support Connection's "Eighteenth Annual Support-A-Walk," to be held at Franklin D. Roosevelt State Park in Yorktown Heights on Sunday, Oct. 7 in support of breast and ovarian cancer causes.

No fees are charged to register or attend and there is no minimum required to make a donation.

A Walk T-shirt can be purchased and picked at the Support Connection office in Yorktown Heights for a donation of $50 and additional T-shirts are available at $25 each. If not sold out in advance, T-shirts will also be available for purchase at the walk. T-shirts can be picked during the following office hours: Weekdays until Oct. 5, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday from Sept. 29, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. In-person registration and donations are also accepted during these hours.

Helping to conduct the fundraising three-mile walk as honorary chairpersons will be local radio personalties Kacey Morabito Grean of 100.7 WHUD's Mike and Kacey in the Morning, and Matt Sampson, News12 Westchester/Hudson Valley morning and daytime co-anchor.

Support Connection, the event organizer, offers emotional, social and educational services to women affected by breast and ovarian cancer. Its services include counseling, support groups, referral and information services, and a toll-free cancer information and support hotline (1-800-532-4290).

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
