Kickoff time for the preseason game between the Jets and Giants in MetLife Stadium has been moved up from 7 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. WNBC, channel 4, will televise the game in this area.
Although Hurricane Irene is not expected to reach the New York/New Jersey/Westchester County area until Sunday morning, Giants team owner John Mara said the change in starting time will allow attendees more time to prepare for the storm.
However rain is expected at game time.
The time change announcements appeared on both the Giants' and the Jets official websites.
The Giants' site reported: “We moved the start time based on the weather forecast and to give everybody an opportunity to get home safely after the game,” said John Mara, the Giants President and Chief Executive Officer. “There are, obviously, many issues to consider. Our players played a game on Monday night, the stadium personnel has to secure the building post-game and, most importantly, the safety and welfare of Giants and Jets fans. We felt like this is the right thing to do.”
The Jets' site noted: "The Jets will be playing the Giants for the 43rd straight preseason. The teams opened their series in the afternoon back in 1969, when the Green & White, fresh off their Super Bowl III triumph, played Big Blue for the first time in any game and prevailed, 37-14, at the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Conn."
