Sleepy Hollow Soil Remediation Status: 13 Properties Complete

Win Sakdinan, spokesperson for Duracell, which is overseeing the soil remediation project underway in the Barnhart Park/Beekman area in Sleepy Hollow offers this status update:

“Interim Remedial Measures… are off to a solid start thanks to the close collaboration of the community,” he writes.

Thirteen properties have been completed so far, meaning the chemical-heavy soil has been replaced with new plantings restored. A photo here shows the plantings one household on Beekman, adjacent to the Sokol, now enjoys.

Active work is currently underway on nine properties, one of them pictured here on Beekman with its protective green mesh-lined fencing and air quality monitor, with work on more properties to begin soon.

If the order of properties seems arbitrary, Sakdinan explains that there’s much to coordinate.

They cluster properties in groups of two to five houses with a work schedule specific to the group and dependent on the alignment of: getting agreement from property owners, plan approval from New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC), and permit approvals from the Village.

“Gillette is working diligently to put all of these pieces into place for each property in order to safely and efficiently complete the required remediation and restoration program,” Sakdinan said.
