Tarrytown Lakes Get Benches, Trash Cans, Improved and New Trails

It’s phase one of the construction of the Tarrytown Lakes project funded by a New York state grant and matching funds from the village and the signs of progress are visible: new benches, new trash cans, new trails.

Resident Craig Allan posted in the Tarrytown Lakes group a progress report and photos of the work by Luna Landscape Corp. of West Harrison. The trail, designed by Stephen Yarabeck of Hudson and Pacific Designs, will ultimately connect the North County Trailway with the Old Aqueduct Trail.

The old railway bed has been cleared of trees and roots, and resurfaced with crushed stone and stone dust. The sides of the trail have been cleared and seeded to reduce erosion and the new grass is thriving. Concrete pads and five new trailside benches have been installed, as well as two sets of trash & recycling containers.

Soon the 1883 trestle railway bridge will be repaired and upgraded with a new pedestrian deck. The trail construction between the bridge and Tower Hill Road is already well on its way to being completed. The next section will then turn east downhill to meet the Old Croton Aqueduct State Historic Trail near Sleepy Hollow High School.

Resident Rob DeRocker remarked that the trails are looking great but that infamous soccer field seems to be trapped in time, or regressing. The algae in the lake is another matter…

“On the downside, the soccer field looks no closer to play than it did two years ago (and less than it did five years ago). And I've never seen more algae in the (west?) lake than what's there now,” Derocker wrote.
