Free Jazz Concerts Tonight at Lyndhurst and Tomorrow Evening at Patriots Park

The Ray Mantilla Latin Jazz ensemble will perform tonight at Lyndhurst and the Gerry Malkin Quartet will play tomorrow evening at Patriots Park.

"Sunset Jazz at Lyndhurst," a free-admission, Thursday-evening concert series to run throughout August begins tonight, August 4, at Lyndhurst in Tarrytown with a performance by the Ray Mantilla Latin Jazz ensemble. The grounds open for admission at 5 p.m. and the music will start at 6:30 p.m. Parking costs $10 per car.

Tomorrow a free concert will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. when the Gerry Malkin Quartet with George Colligan plays at Patriots Park in Tarrytown. The Patriots Park concert is one of four for the month of August. 

The remaining August Jazz shows in Patriots Park include the following:

  • Aug 12th – Le Pompe Attack "Gypsy Jazz" 
  • Aug 19th – Laura Dreyer Quartet
  • Aug 26th – Giacomo Gates Quartet

The Lyndhurst music schedule for the remainder of August is:

  • Aug. 11th – Louis Hayes Quartet
  • Aug. 18th – Samba New York
  • Aug. 25th – Ray Charles Tribute Group

All of the Lundhurst concerts will be held outdoors on the West Lawn weather permitting or in case of rain under a tent at the Carriage House Courtyard. Attendees are advised to bring a blanket or low-profile lawn chairs.

Percussionist Mantilla has collaborated on more than 200 albums and appeared at the Apollo Theater, the Palladium, Blue Note, Birdland, Fat Tuesday's, Village Gate and the Village Vanguard.  

He has played with Max Roach, Charles Mingus, Ray Barretto, Gato Barbieri, Sonny Stitt, Bobby Watson, Herbie Mann, Tito Puente, Cedar Walton, and Freddie Hubbard. He has also performed at many international jazz festivals.

The Lyndhurst music series and the Patriots Park jazz concert were organized by Jazz Forum Arts, a music-industry management firm led by Mark Morganelli and headquartered in Dobbs Ferry.

For the Lyndhurst shows, you can purchase picnic baskets prepared by Le Moulin, an Irvington, NY caterer. They can be ordered in advance by phone up to Tuesday at 2 p.m. of the week of the concert. Homemade ice cream provided by The Blue Pig, based in Croton, will be available for purchase on the concert site. To order picnic baskets for the Lyndhurst concerts call 914-591-4680 from Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Lyndhurst, a 67-acre National Trust for Historic Preservation site, is at 635 South Broadway, Tarrytown, NY, 914-631-4481.

Patriots Park is located at 121 North Broadway, Tarrytown, next to the Warner Library. Street parking is available.

When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
