The Westchester Broadway Theatre in Elmsford has released its 2013 show schedule.
Seven Broadway revivals are planned beginning with Fiddler on the Roof, actually a carryover from 2012 that will play until February 10. The plays bowing in next year, all musicals, are In the Heights, Guys and Dolls, The Sound of Music, Oliver, Kiss Me Kate and White Christmas.
Evening performances will be held at the theater during 2013 on Thursday through Sunday. Matinee performances during 2013 will take place on Wednesday through Friday and Sunday. Ticket prices include lunch or dinner and range from $52 to $80 per person plus tax depending on performance time and date. Beverages and gratuities are additional.
The 2013 schedule follows:
Fiddler on the Roof. Musical. At Westchester Broadway Theatre from January 3 to February 10, 2013. The original Broadway show opened in 1964 with Zero Mostel playing Tevye. The play is based on the 1905 story Tevye and His Daughters written by Sholem Aleichem (the pen name for Yiddish author Solomon Naumovich Rabinovich who died in 1916). A three-hour, motion-picture version, produced and directed by Norman Jewison, came out in 1971 with Topol replacing Zero Mostel.
In The Heights. Musical. At Westchester Broadway Theatre from February 7 to March 13, 2013. Opened on Broadway in March, 2008. Earlier versions, going back several years, were staged elsewhere including off-Broadway. It played on Broadway until January, 2011. The score is an array of hip hop, salsa, pop, soul, reggae, cha-cha, and mambo. The “Heights” refers to the Washington Heights neighborhood in New York City.
Guys and Dolls. Musical. At Westchester Broadway Theatre from March 21 to May 26, 2013. Opened on Broadway in November, 1950 and starred Robert Alda, Sam Levene, Vivian Blaine, Isabel Bigley and Pat Ronney, Jr. (son of the legendary dancer Pat Rooney). Many revivals followed. In this play, gangsters, gamblers, missionaries and showgirls interact. A film version appeared in 1955 starring Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Jean Simmons and Vivian Blaine.
The Sound of Music. Musical. At Westchester Broadway Theatre from May 30 to August 4, 2013. Opened on Broadway in November, 1959 starring Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. The film version came out in 1965 and starred Julie Andrews Christopher Plummer, Eleanor Parker, Richard Haydn and Max Detweiler. It won the 1965 Academy Award for Best Picture. Music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, book by Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse. Based on the book The Story of the Trapp Family Singers by Maria von Trapp.
Oliver. Musical. At Westchester Broadway Theatre from August 7 to September 1, 2013. Opened in London in 1960 with Ron Moody as Fagin and debuted on Broadway in 1963. The 1968 film won the Academy Award for Best Picture. It starred Ron Moody, Oliver Reed, Jack Wild, Shani Wallis, Mark Lester and Harry Secome. Based on the classic Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens about orphan Oliver Twist, published in 1837.
Kiss Me Kate. Musical. At Westchester Broadway Theatre from September 5 to November 10, 2013. Opened on Broadway in December, 1948. Alfred Drake, Harold Lang, Charles Wood, Harry Clark, Patricia Morison, and Lisa Kirk were in the original cast. The play revolves around a former husband-and-wife acting team at war with each other while attempting to stage a musical version of Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew.
White Christmas. Musical. At Westchester Broadway Theatre from November 14, 2013 to January 5, 2014. The Broadway version was based on the Paramount 1954 film of the same name which included seventeen Irving Berlin songs. In the plot, U.S. Army veterans Bob Wallace and Phil Davis are a successful song-and-dance act. With romance in mind, they follow two singing sisters to a Christmas show at a Vermont lodge, owned by Bob and Phil’s former army commander, General Waverly. The film cast included Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney, Vera-Ellen and Dean Jagger.
