Pia Salk, who kids have been befriending this summer at held at her Philipse Manor house, is also brave enough to do stand-up comedy.
Tonight in NYC she is joining in Ladies of Laughter, the Women of Comedy Contest. The prelimary events, of which tonight is the last, weed out candidates leading up the finals on August 15 at 8 p.m. at the Gotham Comedy Club. The competition is organized by Hudson Valley native, Peggy Boyce.
So root for Sleepy Hollow's Salk tonight at 8 p.m. at the Broadway Comedy Club, MCed by Patty Rosborough. Tickets can be purchased at ladiesoflaughter.org, (using code: Friends5 ONLINE to get $5 off.) Proceeds support Buddy Cares, wellness for adoption dogs.
Speaking of dogs, Salk can be read regularly on her “Daily Wag” blog on Martha Stewart's website. Her bio there is impressive: Salk is “psychologist, animal welfare advocate, and expert on the human-animal bond...writer and spokesperson for Adopt-a-Pet.com...professor in the area of diversity and family systems...and...the niece of polio vaccine developer Jonas Salk and daughter of bestselling author and psychologist Lee Salk.”
And comedian, of course.
Salk promises comedy that riffs on self-depreciation. "I'm dry and make fun of myself - as a shrink, as a vegan, as niece of Polio vaccine inventor Dr. Jonas Salk."
Plenty of women are competing tonight, each for three minutes. Says Salk, "We need people to come out and support those I like to call.... 'women who roar!'"
