He put out a call on Patch for support before he did this ridiculously torturous race to raise money for Chinese moon bears (by way of the Animals Asia society). And raise money he did.
“All in all I managed to raise about $27,000, which is still unbelievable to me," he said. "The people at Animals Asia were utterly thrilled; not just with the money, but with the publicity too."
You can watch just what kind of grit (or insanity) it takes to do this race on this official YouTube video. One stretch involves running through high voltage wires (10,000 volts). Incidentally Patch just reported that one hundred years ago this week a man got blasted with ; for him, it was an accident. Madden does this on purpose.
No sooner did Madden complete this madness, than he started planning for the next one.
His Crowdrise.com page will become his fundraising page for the next run, most likely in the spring of 2013. “And my next mud run I’m thinking of upping the ante and running it in a bear costume, at the risk of catching fire, drowning or both," Madden said. "Should get some attention don’t you think?”

“I’m encouraging people to either join me, or do their own crazy thing to raise money,” he said. Crazy things can include: skydiving, bungee jumping, dying your hair green. Bear suit optional.
