Big Deal: Antique Appraisal, Mother's Tea, Acrobats

Our weekly list of the five best bargains, sales and shopping events around town and beyond.

Now that we've done our taxes, it's time to start thinking about Mother's Day. Here a few mother-worthy deals, along with an antiques appraisal event, an old-timey traveling circus, and martial arts classes. 

1. 

The Deal: It's Warehouse Wednesday season at the local yarn shop, when selected merchandise is brought down from the second floor studio and showcased at super-cheap prices. Snag deals such as: a $.50 bag of buttons, $2.50 to half-price yarn, stacks of off-season books. And always there are free patterns giveaways.

The Dates: Wednesdays, now through mid-August.

The Deal: Take Mom out for a rare treat. Mother’s Day Afternoon Tea is $26 per person and includes a prix fixe meal of assorted tea sandwiches and desserts and a free gift for Mom. Price excludes tax and gratuity.

4. Dobbs Ferry High School

The Deal: Find out how much Grandma's treasure is really worth at this third annual Antiques Appraisal Event sponsored by Inter-Village Continuing Education, held in the Dobbs Ferry High School cafeteria, 505 Broadway. Bring in three items for verbal appraisal for $30, $25 for early registrants.

5. Van Cortlandt Manor

The Deal: Celebrate Memorial Day weekend with Animals and Acrobats, an event capturing the fun of an early American traveling circus.  Buy your tickets in advance online at www.hudsonvalley.org using promo code PATCH and save $2 on all tickets. So, an adult ticket will be $10 instead of $12, and a child's ticket will be $4 instead of $6. Children under 5 are free. 

The Dates: Event dates, May 28 through 30. Please note that this deal is applicable only for advance online sales.

When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
