Many walking by our were eager some months back to see the “for lease” signs down. They've been peering inside the plate glass windows of the former Tarrytown Gourmet for any sign of life in there since.
No such luck.
Today Sandy Arnau, bookkeeper for the Coco Management company based out of Tuckahoe, said the space, which was vacated by the gourmet grocer over a year ago in June, is indeed still very much on the market.
“We are just in the middle of changing real estate agents,” she said.
Like me, and many readers, the management company also thought Trader Joe's would be great for the space and tried to contact the store. “We did call them,” said Arnau. “We do know they are growing in the area and thought Tarrytown is the kind of place that would attract a Trader Joe's. Trader Joe's was at the top of our list.”
Alas, we are not at the top of Trader Joe's list. more decisively than they did me. While “Amy” no-last-name told me that TJ's wasn't expanding into our area any time soon, someone higher up at the store told the Coco company that the space, at 11,700 square feet over two floors, just wasn't big enough for what they were after.
Meanwhile, Arnau says they are “floating around a few ideas” for the space and are “open to whatever.” However, she noted, they will honor “what we think the Tarrytown area wants, not just throw anything into a space.”
Though the space seems a natural fit for another grocery store with basement storage/prep area (Arnau noted the trend in organic would be of interest), the lower floor could also be opened up (in the way of neighbor ) and used for two floors of retail, office space, fill-in-the-blank. Coco could also divide it for two (or more?) renters.
“We are very open-minded,” said Arnau.
Of course it's costly to keep a big space empty so long; and costly to rent it. The rent, last we reported in December 2011, as listed by then-agent Aries, Deitch and Endelson cited it as $35/square foot/year, which at a total of 11,770 square feet divided over two floors comes to a whopping $411,950 annually or $34,329/month.
Arnau promised to keep me posted, as I will do for you.
What would you like to see in the former Tarrytown Gourmet? Many great ideas were exchanged here, let's keep them coming.
