Sixty Five Years of Great Achievements

Arc of Westchester Elects New President at 65th Annual Meeting

HAWTHORNE, NY - June 16, 2014 - The Arc of Westchester Annual Meeting was held on June 10th at Arc of Westchester’s Gleeson-Israel Gateway Center at 265 Saw Mill River Road in Hawthorne. The event began at 6:00 pm with a reception followed by a business meeting and award presentations. It was a special evening for the entire community. Over 100 individuals including chapter members, invited guests, self-advocates, staff and board members attended.

Marc Brandt, Executive Director NYSARC, Inc., gave the keynote address. He spoke of our 65 years of achievements and what changes will shape our future.  Joan Volpe, Regional Director OPWDD, also shared information about new processes for families obtaining services.

The membership elected a new slate of officers and board members for 2014-2015.

The Arc of Westchester appointed Bernard A. Krooks, Esq. as new President of the Board of Directors.  Krooks is a founding partner of Littman Krooks LLP, with offices in New York City, White Plains and Fishkill and is the Chair of its Elder Law and Special Needs Department. He is a nationally prominent expert in all aspects of estate planning, elder law, and special needs planning. He has been chosen among The Best Lawyers in America®, the definitive guide to legal excellence, in the field of Elder Law and Trusts and Estates for each of the last seven years. He has also been recognized as a “New York Super Lawyer” since 2006.

Rosa Rodriguez, of Peekskill was appointed president-elect; Abby Reuben of Mount Kisco was re-elected Secretary; and Jonathan Ferguson of Princeton, NJ was re-elected Treasurer. 

The agency also recognized a number of partners and community volunteers for their outstanding contributions to social inclusion for people with developmental disabilities. They were each presented with unique artwork created by individuals in our art programs.

The USAlliance Credit Union received The Arc of Westchester Foundation Award; Phyllis Rizzi, SW BOCES received the School Partnership Award; Marc White of Irvington  received the Volunteer Partnership Award; and Ruth Dewey of Sleepy Hollow received The Katzenberg Award.  Art awards were presented to three individuals for outstanding entries in gallery exhibitions during the past year.

Gallery265—The agency’s art gallery opened its latest exhibit, “Hat’s Off To Arc.”  Under the direction of Roberta Nichelsen, Day Habilitation Instructor at Arc of Westchester, individuals in the agency’s programs decorated hats of all sizes and shapes in celebration of NYSARC Inc. and Arc of Westchester’s 65th Anniversary. The exhibition is open through September.

Arc of Westchester is the largest agency in the county serving people of all ages who have disabilities such as autistic spectrum disorders, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy and learning disabilities. Currently celebrating 65 years in the community, Arc of Westchester has long advocated social inclusion for individuals with disabilities because of benefits to the entire community.
