JCC on the Hudson to Break Ground For New Campus in Fall

The JCC on the Hudson in Tarrytown plans to break ground for an expanded campus during the fall of this year. A major renovation program started this spring for the former GM Training Center which neighbors the JCC and which will become a part of the campus. The interior reconfiguration of the present JCC building, which is being retained, will take place later.

The JCC is increasing total space occupancy from 17,000 to 75,000 square feet.

The ex-GM property was purchased by the JCC in 2009 and it directly abuts the northern boundary of the existing JCC facility, which was acquired by the JCC in 1994 and occupied in 1995.

The internal configurations for the two buildings were developed by the architectural firm of Peter Gisolfi Associates in Hastings-on-Hudson. The design for the former GM building called for eleven thousand square feet at the structure's rear to be removed. That was completed this spring.

The present JCC building will become the "Children's Center."

Fundraising drive closing in on goal

A fundraising program headed by JCC chairman Michael Maron and executive director Frank Hassid was launched in 2010 with a goal of $7 million. With nearly $6 million now pledged, the drive has reached the "help us finish" stage. Several naming opportunities exist for facilities within the complex, payable over five years, for various contribution levels.

"This campus offers an entire community all the programs and services it needs in one place," Hassid said. "There will be something here for all ages and for all interests in a welcoming environment."

Project leadership and advice have been provided by the JCC Board and its executive committee members: Peter Boritz, Michelle Frank, Allen Halpern, Michael Maron and Amy Martini. Boritz is a Tarrytown resident, Maron is from Dobbs Ferry and Frank, Halpern and Martini reside in Irvington.

When work on the campus is completed, the JCC will offer the following activities and services:

  • Adult dance classes
  • Art instruction
  • Book club
  • Boot camp
  • Bridge
  • Catering services for parties and social affairs

Local companies will be eligible to purchase "corporate memberships" that allow their employees to use facilities such as the fitness center.

Donations are tax deductible and can be made by credit card.

The JCC currently has 120 full-time and part-time employees and this number is expected to reach 250 once the new campus is fully operational.

The JCC is a non-sectarian community center; it opened in Yonkers in 1929 and remained at the same location until 1991.

From 1991 to 1995, it occupied 12 different sites simultaneously before settling in Tarrytown in 1995.
