A contractor punched a hole in a gas main while digging near the intersection of Broadway and Prospect Avenue, police said.
Traffic has reopened on Route 9, which had been shut from 11:45 a.m. to 2:10 p.m.
Crews from Consolidated Edison are on the scene mending the main. The lower portion of Prospect Avenue will be closed at least till 4 p.m., police said.
