Don't Let Nyack Patch Beat Us to 1,000 Likes

Like Tarrytown Patch on Facebook or else your editor will have to do something stupid.

They have the big downtown parking lot; we have the train station.

We share a bridge, but who needs cars when you have the headless horseman.

They have cheap hotels you can send your low-budget guests to; we have a Castle.

Perhaps they have the better nightlife (arguably?) and we have the better restaurants (arguably?); maybe we'll call this a tie.

In any case, what we do have in common with Nyack – truly our sister town across the river, all competitions aside – is Facebook Likes.

Tarrytown Patch and Nyack Patch are ridiculously neck to neck as we edge toward 1,000 Likes on Facebook.

Please don't let them beat us to the finish.

If Nyack gets to 1,000 first, your poor Tarrytown-Sleepy Hollow editor will have to...

If Tarrytown gets to 1,000 first, then Kevin can...

Post your ideas in the comments; please don't be cruel or vulgar as we will have to delete or ignore you.

So, it's Kevin vs. Krista, Nyack vs. The Tarrytowns.

Clearly you know that we are cooler and way more popular. Let's prove it!

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
