Last Chance: Benefit Ball, Super-Survey

A few upcoming deadlines you don't want to miss.

School Board Superintendent Survey

If you missed the public meetings, then please take the survey collecting community input on what you are looking for a new School Superindent.

This note is being emailed around to parents from a parent, who didn’t want to use his name, but did want to spread the word and encourage greater participation:

The hiring of a new superintendent and assistant superintendent is the single biggest decision to be made by the school board and will affect the quality of education and the overall district for years to come. To put this in perspective, Dr. Smith will have been the superintendent for 12 years by the time of his retirement (I believe the average tenure for a superintendent is 5-6 years). The board has engaged a search firm to help with this process. In the meantime, the board has stated its intention to make the process transparent to the public and to base its decision on the feedback it receives from the community.

To that end, an online survey has been set up – here is the link. [It can also be accessed in Spanish here.]

I think it is extremely important for you to make your voice heard in this process. The board has provided the opportunity for you to express your opinion, so please take advantage of the opportunity. The more feedback and opinions provided to the board, the better the chances that the ultimate outcome will reflect the desires of the community.

The Deadline is Oct. 22 to take the online survey.

Last Call for Beneft Ball!

Today, yes that's right, today is your last chance to buy advanced tickets to Friday's Masquerade Ball, this year honoring the well-deserving co-owners of J.P. Doyle’s and, as always, benefitting the children. The theme: Fairy Tales. (And if you do not buy in today, then you can show up tomorrow at the door with a check in your hand, but don't even think about coming without a costume).

A big part of the problem is that the teachers' expectations about what supplies are necessary haveRead More become so extreme. When my kids were in school in Tarrytown, we would get a list at the beginning of every school year of the supplies we needed to buy. The parents were asked to buy a separate looseleaf binder for every single class our kids were taking and, for some classes, they asked for a looseleaf AND a spiral notebook. When I was in school, each kid had ONE looseleaf and we separated classes with dividers. Having SIX or seven loose leafs adds to backpack weight and costs a lot of money. My kids supply bills were often close to $100 apiece. The teachers have bought into this idea that all of these supplies are necessary and they are not. I'm not surprised that Staples is offering "rewards programs." Their advertising and marketing efforts have convinced the teachers that you must have a package of 12 red correcting pens, per child.
