There is no need for a second fire company in Irvington. Almost every volunteer fire company/department/district is in need of additional volunteers. To lure present members away or new volunteers into a new company is a duplication of effort, time & money. With the economy in its' present condition, and the training requirements; many prospective applicants cannot attend the classes required.

Have your read the article or seen the Irvington meeting with regard to this? There is no luring of members away, there is no duplication of anything. The Irvington fire department is broken. I applaud Mr. Kabelev, it's about time someone shed light on this misuse of donations. I suggest you watch the meeting, it's available on line.

There is a clear misuse of donations made to the IFD. Frankly the explanation offered by the chief is embarrassing. For morale? It is about time light is finally shed on this operation. i applaud Mr. Kabelev and couldn't agree more with the description and ethics he proposes for the new company. Irvington residents and fire fighters a like should be proud.

Basically, all fire departments operate in this manner. It is not a misuse of funds. Check with your own department. Those who were harassing Mr. Kablev should be punished for their actions, no question. The article did state that a few members backed his request for a new company. Taxes are already high enough without trying to fund another company. Grants will not cover all operating costs, and are not always obtained. The company owes Mr. Kablev a public apology. Additional punishment is owed by those who participated. By the way, neither of us live in Irvington, hopefully both the village board and the fire company will start a healing action.

Dobbs Ferry resident, do you volunteer for either the ambulance corps. or the fire department. Always can use members.

I have no idea where you are DC, but in Irvington the misuse of donations was indefensible. Have you any idea the extent of the monies which were spent on dinners and trips? I do. Further I have a very close friend in Hastings who volunteers and this outrageous misuse of funds is NOT GOING ON THERE. I am glad that here in Irvington we will finally be holding this company accountable and this behavior is GOING TO CHANGE.

GOING TO CHANGE. So are the Number of Volunteers

LTO , I do Volunteer and every dept uses donations for various social events that will benefit ALL members. Donations to a COMPANY is used in this way because THE DEPARTMENT is responsible to purchase gear and/or equipment NOT the individual company. Please don't try and twist my facts or argue what I wrote it is ALL fact but it is not abused individuals do not have access it is all voted on at the company level and all monies (balances) are presented to every member at the company level. I wish Mr. Kabelev the best I was in many classes with him but everyone needs to take a deep breath before you destroy a whole dept over he said she said. Again donations have ALWAYS been used for social functions because the villages give us a laughable budget.

Nobody, Kabelev or myself is suggesting destroying the department. There's a reason Kabelev is proposing a new company. The amount of money spent from donations on "morale boosters" is COMPLETELY OUT OF HAND. This is not WHEEL OF FORTUNE. What is laughable is your defense of this abuse and this ongoing sham.
