Theresa Gorski, 'Champion of Children'

Gorski, mother of two girls, worked for the Bronx Legal Aid Society in the Juvenile Rights division and will be mourned by many.

The quaint house at 127 New Broadway still has ornaments dangling from a tree, red ribbons festooning the porch, and yellow police tape blocking the entrance.

On the shrubs Thursday morning someone has placed a bunch of yellow roses.

The news came Wednesday afternoon that Theresa Gorski, mother of two girls, has been taken off life support following Saturday's alleged strangulation by her husband, 49-year-old Christopher Howson.

The Webber Park neighborhood is reeling from its string of bad news this week, from the sudden death of Catherine Kadnar and the accident befalling firefighter Richie Green to this.

"I pray," one elderly New Broadway neighbor and grandmother to seven kept repeating. "It's incredible. The poor children."

Steven Banks, Attorney-in-Chief of The Legal Aid Society, where Gorski worked for over a decade, released this statement:

With profound sadness, we regret to inform you that Theresa Gorski passed away today. Staff in her office have reflected on what a wonderful colleague she was and a passionate advocate for our clients. She did not survive an act of domestic violence in her home that occurred during this past weekend. Theresa was a staff attorney in the Bronx Office of the Juvenile Rights Practice of The Legal Aid Society for the past 11 years. Our hearts go out to Theresa's family, and her colleagues in the Bronx Juvenile Rights Practice office and throughout JRP and the Society.

Jessica Brenes, who knew Gorski professionally, commented on Patch, "she was a Champion of Children. I pray she is resting in peace and that her children are well cared for and loved."

A former neighbor, Eileen Wiseman, wrote, "I lived across the street from Theresa and her family for eight years. She was so very proud of her two beautiful girls, and doted on them both. She was a gentle, kind, lovely person. Words cannot describe the sadness."

The District Attorney's office said that Howson was "still on" for a Monday appearance at Sleepy Hollow's Village Court and that "any possible upgrade of charge is still pending." He is currently facing charges of attempted murder and strangulation and is being held without bail at Westchester County Jail.

One neighbor is working on putting together a foundation to raise money for Gorski's children and said the funeral is likely being scheduled for Monday.

Two events, three little children left without parents, one with tragic last images of his beloved mother imprinted on his psyche and the other two with the eventual knowledge of the heinous act committed by their own father. Don't know if it's too intrusive to ask, but is it safe to assume that relatives have stepped up to the plate to take these children into their loving homes? My motives for asking are not nosiness, they're to determine whether or not there is a need for help. God knows we all wish we could have helped before the fact.

Thank you, Krista, for memorializing Theresa so beautifully.

I believe that the two beautiful little girls are staying with their mother's sister, in CT. However, I was told that she is a single parent and also caregiver for elderly, ill mother and also working....I can not imagine her stress. I wish we could help without being intrusive. Maybe donations for care of the girls?? A fund?
