Tappan Zee Bridge Closes at 4 p.m.

By order of the Governor, the Tappan Zee Bridge is now closed to all vehicular traffic in both directions.

On Monday afternoon, State Trooper T stationed in Tarrytown confirmed the imminent closure of the Tappan Zee Bridge to all traffic as of 4 p.m. until further notice.

Trooper Smith said drivers who need to cross the river can cross at Beacon or the Mid-Hudson Bridge but not further south on the George Washington Bridge since that is slated to close as well.

Smith said this came by order of Governor Andrew Cuomo.

“As always, our top priority is motorist safety, and if conditions warrant we may close the Tappan Zee Bridge to all traffic at any time,” said Thruway Authority Executive Director Thomas J. Madison earlier Monday. “In any case, if sustained winds or gusts reach 60 mph the bridge will be closed to traffic in both directions.”

Just a half hour prior to the announcement that all vehicles would not be allowed to cross the three-mile span, an alert came out forbidding motorcycles, buses and tractor trailers.

Southbound traffic on the New York State Thruway will be required to exit the roadway at or before exit 13, Palisades Interstate Parkway. Northbound traffic will be required to leave roadway at exit 8, I-287 Cross Westchester Expressway.

Stay tuned for updates on the bridge as Sandy soon hits land in New Jersey.
