Today, Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow remember the tragedy that hit the World Trade Center 11 years ago. But at ground zero, the future is being shaped.
The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says steel on the new One World Trade Center has risen to the 102nd floor. When it's completed — scheduled for early 2014 — One World Trade Center will rise 1,776 feet to the top of its spire, making it the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere.
To mark One World Trade Center becoming the tallest building in New York, EarthCam created a time-lapse video showing the construction from 2004-2012. The video condenses the construction to two minutes. Another time-lapse video by EarthCam shows the construction of the memorial that marks the location of the twin towers of the orginal World Trade Center.
From ground zero, there will be a live webcast at the 9/11 Memorial of the ceremony commemorating the 11th anniversary of the attacks, starting at 8:30 a.m.
Here is the schedule of this morning's ceremonies at ground zero:
8:46 a.m. - A moment of silence in observance of time first plane that struck the north tower of the World Trade Center
Families of victims of the 2001 and 1993 attacks at the World Trade Center will then begin reading the names of the victims in pairs.
9:03 a.m. Moment of silence in observance of the time the second plane that struck south tower of the World Trade Center
9:37 a.m. Moment of silence in observance of when Flight 77 struck the Pentagon
9:59 a.m. Moment of silence in observance of time of fall of the south tower.
10:03 a.m. Moment of silence in observance of when Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania.
10:28 a.m. Moment of silence in observance of the time of fall of the north tower.
12 p.m. Program is expected to conclude.
At dusk, the Tribute in Light will be turned on. The lights are located at West and Morris Streets in Lower Manhattan. The lights begin fading away at dawn on September 12. The beams of light symbolize the twin towers of the World Trade Center.
At the memorial, 2,983 names of the men, women, and children killed in the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001 — and Feb. 26, 1993 — are inscribed into bronze parapets surrounding the twin Memorial pools, located in the footprints of the twin towers.
